The East African Community (EAC), made up of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda, represents one the smaller sub-regions in SSA in value terms, both economically and from a pharmaceutical viewpoint. The total value of EAC's pharmaceutical market in 2017 was just USD2.1bn, which corresponds to 17% of SSA’s total medicine expenditure that year. Forecasts show that the market would nearly double to yield a market size of USD4.1bn by 2027, at which point the EAC will still represent a relatively minor proportion of SSA’s pharmaceutical market (19%).
